HARDSCAPE CONSTRUCTION - Built Landscape Elements

Asphalt

Paving Stone

Concrete

Asphalt is the most cost effective option for pavement. Its flexibility allows it to expand and contract with temperature changes to resist cracking. This means its well suited for  Manitoba's climate.

Asphalt makes a great choice for  commercial walking paths, playgrounds & courts because of its smooth surface and softer consistency

Concrete

Concrete is the most common or popular choice for paved surfaces within Winnipeg. When poured at the correct thickness over a properly compacted limestone base it can support heavier loads than asphalt. Due to our soil conditions and climate in Manitoba, concrete here is prone to cracking over long periods of time no matter how well it is prepared and poured.

Paving Stone

Paving stone is the most labour intensive and costly pavement material. It is usually chosen for its superior aesthetic appeal and repairability. Problem areas can be spot levelled or the entire installation can be lifted and re-laid for a fraction of the initial cost. Interlocking stone and paving slabs tend to compliment other landscape features well such as block retaining walls and gardens

Walls

Paving Stone

Walls can be constructed from segmental stone blocks to complement paving stone or from poured concrete. These include freestanding walls and garden walls as well as engineered retaining walls built to sustain loads from the earth behind them.

The same segmental blocks used in walls can be used to build steps. Whether its just one step up from a patio to a door or a full staircase stone steps are where functionality and interest meet. Beautiful landscape features such as  fountains, fireplaces, fire-pits & fully functional outdoor kitchens can also be made from stone.

From decks, sheds, fences and gates to pergolas wood is always a nice compliment to other hardscapes and in some applications and installations such as decks vs. patios are a more suitable option.

Raised wooden decks paired with ground level concrete or stone patios will add interest due to the elevation changes.
